HARARE – Some pastors are very corrupt and take home the church offerings instead of giving them back for church projects, Pastor Eunor Guti, has confirmed.

She is the wife of one of Zimbabwe's wealthiest pastors, Apostle Guti, of the Zimbabwe Assemblies of God Association.

The Church is among the wealthiest in Zimbabwe today. Last year it sponsored a top four-team football tournament to the tune of $60 000.

The Guti family has more than seven luxury motor vehicles and has built various state-of-the-art churches around the country. They live in a mansion in the plush northern suburbs of Harare.

"We have lost our credibility as pastors," Guti said at a recent one-day conference on Fraud in companies and the church.

"If we do not uphold the Lord then we are all lost. Through salvation, however, we can be saved. Pastors must not steal from the church because this is very wrong and not allowed."

She said Pastors must respect each other as well as members of their churches all the time in order to receive salvation.

"Some of the money that goes into the church is stolen money," said Proctor Nyemba, whose firm, Proctor and Associates organised the conference.

"I was shocked when I was told not to report a case of fraud just because it was one of my relatives who happens to be a pastor in the church. If it is fraud then it is fraud whether it is in the church or in companies."

A pastor from the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God said people should not worry whether the pastor "steals the money or not because if he does so he will be punished by God".

"You must just give your offering and not worry about what happens to it," he said.

The conference was attended by more than 50 top managers from various firms in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Israel, who deal with fraud in their companies.
