He was 74. A founder member of the Zimbabwe African National Union, ZANU, Tekere died at Murambi Clinic in Mutare on Tuesday. He succumbed to cancer. Zanu PF spokesman Rugare Gumbo said the country was poorer without “Cde Tekere”
“Personally I beleive he is an independence war luminary, a selfless cadre,” Gumbo said.
Tekere prosecuted the liberation struggle and organised the party during the Lancaster House talks that ushered in Independence in 1980. He served in government before his popularity as a potential rival to Robert Mugabe caused their estrangement. He is survived by his wife Ruvimbo and son Farai Zachariah.
