The traders have been allocated a dura-walled complex, which was reduced to rubble during the 2005 Operation.
“As a responsible council we decided to let residents run flea markets from this underutilised council land, which was once a thriving flea market centre. Beneficiaries of the scheme have been drawn from across the town – irrespective of political affiliation. Anyone interested in operating a flea market from the premises would be welcome,” said Mayor Farai Nyandoro.
“Both the council and residents will benefit from the project. But the scheme will only last until council finds a business person with the capacity to erect up-market business structures at the site,” he added.
As the site is situated within the central business centre, the council is keen to give a tender to someone who would construct modern business structures there.
Informal traders currently conduct their business in the open and regularly engage in running battles with council security officers from the council.
