Too Open releases Ragga-Manyika fusion album

Mutare Ragga Manyika group Too Open, now based in Harare, has just released a new album Still Alive – its first since 2004.

The latest album, which is receiving some rave reviews, is a fusion of Ragga music and a Manyika dialect – bringing back fond memories of the late Stobart Chidikano of Kanyama Karipi fame.

The band, led by Sakubva-born Brian Nhanhanga, also plays mature afro-jazz that it fused with a traditional beat to give it a truly Zimbabwean feel.

Still Alive was recorded at Shed Studio. Prolific Peter Muparutsa, also from Mutare, co-produced, engineered and mixed the album, while Vusa Moyo mastered the product.

“We are still alive. We are back with this album that has 10 songs. We are holding shows and we hope that this latest release will give us the opportunity to re-unite with our fans,” said Nhanhanga in an interview with Showbiz last week.

The songs include, Chenjera, a Jazz track that talks about the difficulties of life. Jazz lovers will have something to cheer about following the superb instrumentation in this number. The group invokes the powers of God to ease the pain and suffering of innocent Zimbabweans in the song Dzimurai.

The song Mudiwa Wangu is likely going to carry the album to the top echelons of glory as it brings out the famous Ragga Manyika beat. The lead singer, Thomas Marimbiti, reminds many of the way the late Chidikano sang Kanyama Karipi.
