Organisers of the event told The Zimbabwean they had to bring the music superstar back to the country because of demand from fans who missed the launch of the decorated musician’s new album, Abi’angu.
Tuku, recently appointed Zimbabwe’s first goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund covering Eastern and Southern Africa, is on Saturday scheduled to serenade his multitudes of fans here at the Standard Bank Arena in Ellis Park on the outskirts of Johannesburg.
“Mtukudzi will be back performing in Johannesburg because of popular demand. Some fans missed out on the launch of the album earlier this month and requested he returns,” said organisers in a statement ahead of the show.
Earlier this month, Mtkudzi launched his unique new album at the Carnival City, east of Johannesburg.
About 4 000 Zimbabwean and other nationals were on hand to witness the event while thousands more missed out as tickets ran out.
Abi’angu, the maestro’s 60th studio album, is a compilation of the duets the veteran musician did alongside such artists as Jaziel brothers, Judith Sephuma, Siphokazi and Ringo Madlingozi of South Africa and other musicians from the continent as Eric Wainana, Cesaria Evora, and Maureen Lilanda.
Compatriots Kudzai Sevenzo, Charles Chiweshe, Willom Tight and XQ also feature in the album whose title loosely translates to ‘My Friend.’
Highfield-born Mtukudzi is hailed as the greatest musician to emerge from Zimbabwe.
