Zim ladies in battle for true beauty crown

The 2nd annual Miss African Spirit pageant takes place here this Saturday – with seven Zimbabweans vying with other Africans for the title. The pageant is unique in that there are no size, height or weight restrictions on the contestants. There is also no swimwear round.

In this day and age where pageants are glorified fashion shows, where it seems slimmer, ‘size zero’ models are the order of the day, the Miss African Spirit has challenged that perspective and has proven that indeed size does not matter, say the organizers.

Zimbabwean Nonhlanhla Togwe was crowned as the overall winner at the first event held last year. Saturday’s pageant sees 25 women who have settled in the UK, representing 11 African countries in Senior (18-30’s) and Junior (14-17’s) categories.

Along with the usual judging criteria including stage presence and self-presentation, contestants are judged on their charity intentions and as part of the contest are asked to submit a proposal for their charity fundraising if they should win the contest. Pageant Director Michelle Adams says, “Just as Miss African Spirit 2010 did, the new title holder will choose a charity which she will support during her reign as Miss African Spirit 2011. We want to ensure that the winner of this pageant has already put some thought into her charity efforts, that her plans are reasonable, practical and logical”.

Included in the judging panel this year is Karen Stally, a Zimbabwean singer-songwriter who held the title of Miss Zimbabwe previously. – for tickets contact: info@missafricanspirit.co.uk
