According to the 2011 African Economic Outlook report recently released by the African Development Bank, Zimbabwe is among the 10 fastest growing African countries.
Zimbabwe registered a 7,8% growth in the first part of 2011. Other countries listed include Botswana 6,9%, Mozambique 7,7%,Tanzania 6,9%, Angola 7,3%, DRC 8,4%, Ethiopia 10%, Ghana 12%, Nigeria 6,9% and Liberia 7,3%.
South Africa is among the slowest growing – with only 3,6% growth. Analysts attribute this to energy supply difficulties.
The AfDB compiled the report with support from such organizations like OECD, UNDP and the Economic Commission for Africa.
In general, Sub-Saharan Africa is registering robust growth. The real GDP growth rate is expected to increase from 5,0% in 2010 to 5,5% in 2011 excluding Cote D'Ivoire. The AfDB said countries in North Africa had been severely affected by the unrest there. These include Cote D'Ivoire -7,3%, Tunisia 1,1%,Libya -19% and Egypt 1,6%.
