30 years for stealing power

Three men from Harare will serve an effective 10 year jail term each after being convicted of stealing 1800 metres of Zesa cables worth $18 000.

Magistrate Aleck Kadye convicted Denroy Dengu (23), Amoni Dhlakama (21) and Ngonidzashe Kunaka (21) on their own pleas of guilty.

Kadye said he gave the three a long imprisonment sentence as vandalism was a serious offence, which was now becoming a cancer in our society.

He hoped the long custodial sentence would help to deter would-be offenders.

Zesa spends millions of dollars to replace stolen copper cables being smuggled to neighbouring countries Mozambique, South Africa and Botswana where there is a ready market.
