Activists still in police custody

The 12 civic society activists who were arrested today by the police outside the High Court in Harare are still detained at the Harare Central Police Station.

They were arrested while holding a peaceful demonstration over the continued detention of eight MDC members arrested in May on false charges of murdering a police officer in Glen View. The police officer was murdered by unknown revellers at a night club.

No charges have been brought against the activists.

In Chiredzi West, the house of Tawanda Imbayago, the MDC secretary for Ward 28, was on Sunday night burnt by known Zanu PF arsonists. Imbayago told The MDC Today that the fire was “furious” suggesting that an inflammable chemical like petrol was used to set the house ablaze. No one was injured but all property was destroyed in the inferno.

A report was made at Chiredzi Police Station but no arrests have been made although some of the culprits have been identified.

Meanwhile, over 2 200 families in Hatcliffe, Harare, Ward 42, today received blankets worth thousands of dollars that were sourced by the Deputy Mayor of Harare, Councillor Emmanuel Chiroto. The beneficiaries were maily the less fortunate who are failing to construct proper housing due to financial constraints.

Last month, Clr Chiroto facilitated the construction of 20 boreholes, and sourced medical drugs to treat over 800 children who were suffering from various illnesses in Ward 28. The boreholes have gone a long way in solving perennial water shortages.
