ARV shortages ‘discriminating’

By one o’clock in the afternoon the pharmacy at Parirenyatwa Hospital is closed and those wishing to collect their anti-retroviral drugs have no choice but to wait until the following day.

According to the pharmacists working in the largest hospital in the country, staff shortages are to blame for their half days.

“We close early because we need to prepare for tomorrow. It’s not like we go home when we close, we just do not have the manpower to stay open any longer,” said one of the three pharmacists on duty.

The Zimbabwe HIV and AIDS Activists Union (ZHAU) said that the early closure

of the pharmacy at the hospital is nothing short of discrimination against those living with HIV and AIDS.

The union has called on the government to intervene and hopes that staff shortages will soon be resolved.
