Council begs for cash

The cash-strapped urban council here is asking rate-payers to allow it to borrow US$2,2 million for motor vehicles and the sprucing up of various equipment and buildings in the city.

In an interview, a Senior Gweru City Council official confirmed that his council was asking residents to give it the go-ahead for the projects.

Gweru Town Clerk, D Matawu, said he would be advertising this request in the newspapers countrywide because it involved council "cash". He said the total amount requested was US$2 155 000 in cash.

"The funding is required for the purchase of utility vehicles, plant and equipment," he said.

The official said ratepayers could oppose the cash request but should lodge their rejections with their offices in Gweru.
