Gukurahundi commemoration

Mthwakazi Liberation Front (MLF) will early next month hold a ceremony to commemorate victims of President Robert Mugabe’s notorious Gukurahundi killings.

With the remains of most victims still in disused mines, while those affected by the disturbances have still not been compensated, MLF spokesman David Magagula said his organization would hold the day as a way of helping victims relive their experiences in public.

Named the Gukurahundi National Mourning Day, the event will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom.

“We will give victims of the genocide a chance to recount what they went through and what they saw during that time of Mugabe’s brutality,” said Magagula.

“There will also be prayer sessions for those who died, so that their souls may rest in peace and hope that one day we will be able to resume their remains and re-bury them decently and afford them the dignity and honour they deserve.”

Magagula said his organization would also use the occasion to encourage living victims and those who lost their loved ones to fight on till justice is found for the killings.
