Kariba plant needs $91,5m upgrade

Kariba South Hydro-Power Plant requires $91,5 million to operate viably, a document in our possession reveals.

The document, which has already been discussed in Cabinet, shows that Kariba South Hydro-Power Plant needs a grand total of $91,5 million to get back on track, having gone for more than two decades without major refurbishment due to government's cash flow problems.

Top of the list for rehabilitation is Governor and EHC up-grading, which will consume $5,5 million, followed by replacing the oil -filled unit transformers with the dry type.

The Plant's risk management levels, including plant safety and health, will gobble $9 million, while the Stator rewinding and upgrading of turbines and major overhauls will need $70,4 million.
