According to the allegations, Nheweyembwa, who was elected to the district youth chairmanship in February, went around villages 2008 and intimidated villagers into voting MDC. He was also accused of beating up three soldiers during the political campaigns. He denies the charges.
“It is common knowledge that it was Zanu (PF) which intimidated and attacked perceived MDC supporters during the 2008 political campaigns and others before. Surprisingly, no Zanu (PF) perpetrator of violence has been arrested and brought to justice in this regard. This was despite the fact that Zanu (PF) perpetrators of violence could be identified and continued roaming about scot-free.
It would seem Zanu (PF) and partisan law enforcement agencies were targeting MDC activists in a failed bid to destroy their spirit,” said an MDC official here.
Nheweyembwa will appear again in court on July 22 when the trial is expected to start.
Another prominent MDC-T official, Murewa North District Chairperson, Golden Mutize, is also appearing in court facing criminal nuisance charges that he accused Zanu (PF) torture base leader Lisbon Chinani of causing the death of MDC-T activist, Sanyangare’s wife, 2009.
The trial also continues July 22 at the Murewa Magistrate’s courts.
