Media freedom quashed

The media environment countrywide is as polarised today as it was before the inclusive government was formed, a senior government official said on Monday.

"The media is no longer serving its purpose in this country. It has once more become polarized along political lines and we urge more training programmes to be instituted for our media practitioners,” Regis Chikowore, a Director in the Media Information and Publicity Ministry, told journalists attending a United Nations media training scheme.

Chikowore added that only cosmetic changes had been made to bring about media freedom and said that journalists were to blame for acting more like politicians than impartial news providers.

“We have allowed ourselves to be political players,” he said.

The state media has come under heavy criticism for its biased reporting and political propaganda that favours Zanu (PF). Chikowore urged the Union of Journalist (ZUJ), to train its members to a professional standard to avoid such biased reporting.
