R150,000 windfall for Bosso from SA trip

Cash-strapped Bulawayo giants, Highlanders received a windfall during their recent trip to South Africa, where they were set to play ABSA Premiership side Bloemfontein Celtic yesterday.

The event is dubbed the Ellis Park World of Sport Winter Challenge Cup. The organisers told The Zimbabwean that Bosso would get at least R150 000 for their participation, making the one-day all expenses paid event a fortune compared to the Zimbabwean league, where the biggest cup competition – played over three games – pays R350 000.

“The triumphant side’s prize is the EPWOS Winter Challenge shield and pocket the winners’ prize money of R150 000, while the losers will get a consolation prize of R100 000,” said event spokesperson, Billy Cooper.

“Each of the teams will also get R50 000 participation fees for their players.”

Highlanders, who toured Johannesburg last year, became the second Zimbabwean topflight team to play in South Africa in less than a week, after another SA-Zim PSL international club friendly – which pit South African Premier League champions, Orlando Pirates against Harare-based Dynamos last Saturday.

Organised by Johannesburg-based humanitarian organisation – the Southern African Women’s Institute for Migration (SAWIMA) the Pirates-Dynamos game is an annual charity friendly meant to fight xenophobia and encourage Africans to live together as one family.

The EPWOS duel was meant to prepare Celtic for the coming 2011/12 PSL season, while also giving thousands of Zimbabwean nationals living in the Ellis Park precinct a chance to watch one of their country’s most supported teams.

EPWOS could have realised that when Highlanders toured South Africa to play Jomo Cosmos in the Ubuntu Calabash last year, their supporters dominated the more than 20 000 fans who thronged Johannesburg stadium, and hence hoped to cash in on the Bosso support again this year.
