Security sector reforms not difficult: Makoni

Mavambo /Kusile/Dawn leader Simba Makoni has thrown his weight behind the need for security sector reforms. He was speaking at the burial of former Mhondoro constituency MP, Mavis Chidzonga, in Gokwe South.

This comes in the wake of partisan statements issued by top military junta chiefs openly admitting their support of President Robert Mugabe and his Zanu (PF) party.

In an interview at Chidzonga village under Chief Njelele, Makoni said security sector reforms were not as impossible as Zanu (PF) would want people to believe.

“Security sector reforms are not difficult at all. It just needs a firm stance to say soldiers should stay at the barracks and oversee defence issues only,” Makoni said.

He added that Zimbabweans should all stand up and claim suspension of all Zanu (PF) policies that are not in line with democracy and transparency.

“There is no reason why soldiers should be dreaded by ordinary citizens due to their partisan nature. Processes by SADC and other organs on security sector reforms should be urgently implemented and there is no reason why the matter should take long to complete,” Makoni said.

Zanu (PF) has in the past strongly opposed security sector reforms on the basis that it would undermine national security.
