UZ sets up new fund

The University of Zimbabwe (UZ), once rated among the top institutions of higher learning in southern Africa, is holding a one-day fundraising event to raise US$5 million for its University Endowment Fund (UEF), Dr Takaruza Chihombori, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, has confirmed.

Dr Chihombori said proceeds from the one-day event would be channelled towards the improvement of student learning facilities, financial assistance for the disadvantaged students and seed capital for the University Endowment Fund (UEF).

"Further, the benefits from the UEF will be used to fund national research projects that address socio-economic issues, promote new technologies and the setting up of a technology resource centre at the UZ," he said.

"The benefits of the UEF are immense and can only propel our country to the next level of economic prosperity. The July 30, 2011 maiden fundraising event is a launch platform to raise a target of US$5 million as seed capital."

A Dinner Dance will be held after the sports day at the UZ.

"The Dinner Dance will feature live music and other entertainment acts from various artists such as the very popular Zimbabwe Republic Police's Prisons Band, raffles, auctions and prize winning competitions," Mtape said.

"The National Gallery of Zimbabwe has also promised that it will give us a top sculpture to auction on the day and this is appreciated. The event also provides an ideal opportunity for the corporate sector to promote and market their products."
