He was responding to reports in the state media that the local authority was putting the lives of residents at risk by giving them untreated water from contaminated sources.

The local authority draws water from Nyakambiri, Nyambuya and Rufaro dams but Environmental Management Agency has condemned the water sources as unsafe.

“I can confirm that our water is safe for human consumption because we have acquired the chemicals to treat it to required standards,” said Nyandoro.

Last year, the local authority was fined $5000 fine for contravening section 57 of the Environmental Management Agency on water pollution, attributed to the former Zanu (PF) administration’s failure to invest in rehabilitation of water and sewer service.

Residents who spoke to this paper confirmed that water supplies have been improved since the MDC-T led council took over office.

“We really appreciate what our council is doing for us. They inherited a broke council but they have managed to bring sanity and bring back water to people. Despite political interference by Local Government Minister Chombo, they are trying their best to improve service delivery,” said Augustine Marayire of Dombotombo Township.
