Under the Zimbabwe Documentation Project (ZDP) which was introduced in September 2010, Zimbabweans illegally staying in SA are being given documents to ensure that their sojourn in SA is one that has a modicum of dignity.
Speaking to the media yesterday, the Chief Director of the ZDP, Mr Jabob Mamabolo said
“On the 31st December 2010, we successfully completed the process of taking applications. We registered a total of 275 762.
This figure includes the total of 6243 amnesty applications. We are pleased to report that we have adjudicated a total of 263 141.
We are still to adjudicate 12 621 applications. We have however only issued 133 331. We are still to issue 142 431 Permits.”
Speaking after this announcement, ZEF Executive Director and Human Rights Lawyer said that they were “pleased with the pace of progress” and commented the Department of Home Affairs for their efforts.
He also indicated that the Zimbabwe Exiles Forum and other civil society organizations representing Zimbabweans in South Africa would meet the department on Monday the 4th of July as the Stakeholders Forum to discuss the following:
• The arbitrary arrests of Zimbabweans that is now taking place in Johannesburg and other areas.
• Procedure for changing the work permit into a study permit and vice-versa for people whose circumstances have changed.
