In a light-hearted moment, Mutambara, former President of the splinter MDC political party, who was ousted by Professor Welshman Ncube, said the country was grossly misrepresented at major international forums by some politicians.
"Zimbabwe's GDP is zero," he said amid applause from more than 100 VIPs gathered for the launch of the book "Enclaves" in Harare.
"If you owe some one US$7 billion and your GDP is US$7 billion then you do o not have any money," Mutambara said.
"If Mr Wellington Chibhebhe owes Mr Lovemore Matombo US$7 billion and then pays back US$6 billion then he still owes US$1 billion," he said.
"We are heavily borrowed and we do not have a GDP to talk about."
He said Zimbabweans should not walk too proudly, raising their heads in the air like proud peacocks because the country "is heavily over-borrowed".
The Washington-based International Monetary Fund says Zimbabwe needs at least US$10 billion to get back on sound economic footing.
The country has, however, had balance its balance of payments support from the Western world cut off due to "alleged abuse of human rights" by the former ruling party, Zanu (PF) currently led by President Robert Mugabe.
Mutamabara said people should not just think that because there is a Government of National Unity things would be smooth sailing.
"We regularly talk about inclusive, but what is inclusive," Mutambara, clad in a navy blue designer suit, asked. "Yes we are together but are we inclusive?"
The Book launch event was attended by more than 100 VIPs from across Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa.
