4 Zim planes at SADC simulation exercise

Zimbabwe provided four army planes to be used during the ongoing joint/multinational simulated humanitarian relief exercise (Exercise Blue Cluster), where air forces from countries within the SADC region are participating.

The event, which began last Saturday and ends this coming Sunday, is being held at the SA Air Force Bases of Hoedspruit and Makhado in Limpopo.

The exercise will see participating nations jointly execute a simulated humanitarian relief operation on the borders of South Africa with Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

Zimbabwe provided one AB412 helicopter, two K-8 Jet fighters and a CASA 212. South Africa provided eight planes and Botswana 10. Angola provided a Sector Control Centre and five Static Radars, among other equipment, while Zambia and Mozambique only pledged human resources to the exercise.

“Approximately 146 members from the afore-mentioned countries will participate,” said Lieutenant Colonel Dinky Mokwebo.

“Areas that will be explored include, among others, simulated humanitarian relief, testing and evaluating command and control systems as well as interoperability amongst various elements of SADC air forces and air wings.”
