60 000 at agricultural show

A record 60 000 people visited the Harare Agricultural Show on Saturday, the last day of the annual event.

In an interview with The Zimbabwean a spokesperson for the HAS said: "There were at least 60 000 people who visited the Harare Show on Saturday and this is a record since the days when the economy was down."

However, a visit to the Harare Agricultural Showgrounds revealed that that there were long snake-like queues of people who failed to get into the grounds at about 3pm. Many went home because they were frustrated that only four gates were opened by the organisers.

The HAS is chaired Dr Robbie Mupawose, one of Zimbabwe's best black commercial tobacco farmers.

The Commercial Farmers Union this year returned to the HAS after a very long absence dating back to the beginning of the Land Resettlement Programme in 2000.

A CFU spokesman said the commercial farmers had returned so that they could try and work with the Government of National Unity (GNU) to try and bring back "sanity to Zimbabwe's agricultural sector”.

President Mugabe revealed during his official opening speech that tobacco had done very well this year and was expected to earn at least US$390 million for the cash-strapped nation.
