Activists honoured

The MDC –T youth assembly on Heroes’ Day honoured all MDC activists who have died since the formation of the party in 2000.

The party’s Bulawayo Provincial Youth Assembly boycotted the traditional Zanu (PF)-dominated provincial heroes’ celebrations and organised parallel commemorations in the city for its heroes and heroines who “sacrificed for the people’s democratic struggle”.

“On heroes day we remembered those great men and women who fell for the cause of our freedom. In appreciation for their commitment and sacrifice for a better Zimbabwe, we gave out certificates to the families of the departed heroes and heroines,” said Bekithemba Nyathi, the MDC Bulawayo youth assembly chairperson.

During the commemorations some family members of the departed activists were also given food hampers.

“Some of the family members are really struggling with life. On heroes day we organised food hampers for the families as a small token of appreciation. We know that is inadequate, but as youths we will continue to look at ways in which the families can be empowered economically,” said Nyathi.

Some of the people who will be remembered are Learnmore Jongwe, Susan Tsvangirai, Gibson Sibanda, Getrude Mthombeni Patrick Nabanyama and the Olds couple, Gloria and Martin. ZAPU also boycotted the heroes’ celebrations.

“The problem is that Zanu (PF) always want to dominate and use these functions for political mileage. As a progressive party we did not want to be seen associating with Zanu (PF),” said the party’s national spokesperson, Methuseli Moyo.
