Arrests of WOZA women

EDITOR - I noted with great concern the arrests of women who were demonstrating peacefully for a fair system electricity supply and billing system. Peaceful protests are a vital part of a democratic society; therefore it is a very powerful campaigning tool.

It should not be taken as an opportunity to arrest people unnecessarily. It is clear that this peaceful protest was not extreme; therefore it was on the right side of the law. It is important to remind the police and the authorities that it is democratically right for people to express their views and to demonstrate peacefully.

The fact that they managed to obtain over a million petition signatures means that it is the concern of the majority and if the problem is given the attention it deserve, it will make the system better and fair not only to demonstrators but to the entire nation.

The system people are demanding is a system that allows a “pay as you go system” for those who cannot afford exorbitant monthly bills. It is a fairer system in that it makes it easy for the customers to manage and pay for their electricity consumption whilst enjoying a consistent supply.

It is in the interest of ZESA and the customers to come up with a fairer system. It is important for democratic rights of citizens to be respected. – DANFORD ZIMUTO, London
