Botswana cancels boxing friendly

The Botswana Boxing Association has cancelled a friendly tournament against Zimbabwe and Tunisia.

The tournament had been scheduled as part of the three countries’ preparations for the 2011 10th All Africa Games in Mozambique next month.

Instead, BoBA sent its team to China to prepare for the games. The three-man national boxing team has therefore joined the rest of Team Zimbabwe for the final camp at Belvedere Teachers’ College in Harare.

Light-heavyweight Josphat Mushayi, lightweight Forster Masiyambumbi and his brother Steven make up the country’s boxing team for the inaugural games. Petros Masiyambumbi is the head coach.

Zimbabwe Amateur Boxing Association Secretary General Goodwill Sibanda said the Botswana tournament would have been a good preparatory session for the All Africa Games.

“Our aim was to train with the Botswana and Tunisian teams at the tournament. Now that the plan has been abandoned, we cannot sit back and relax. We will have to even double our training here at home so that we come with medals in Mozambique,” he said.
