NAC chief executive officer Tapuwa Magure confirmed that the drugs had burnt. “You have to ask Natpharm since they were distributing the drugs, but it’s true that something like that happened,” said Magure.
Natpharm board chairman, Dr George Washaya, confirmed the drugs had burnt but could not give details.
“We are going to hold a board meeting and institute a board of inquiry, that’s when we will avail you with all the details. There were seven trucks carrying the consignment and one was involved in an accident,” said Washaya.
Close to 400 000 Zimbabweans are on ART, with thousands failing to get the drugs because the government cannot meet the demand.
Activists have demanded a full inquiry to establish why Natpharm, which has its own vehicles, had hired Stuttafords to transport the drugs.
"We want to know what will happen to those who will not get drugs because of the accident. Government should not sit on such information," said Stanley Takaona.
