Govt begs help for victims of violence

The government has asked donors for $8 million to help victims of violence.

A report obtained by The Zimbabwean reveals that under Project Code ZIM-11/P-HR-RL/39547/5826 the Zimbabwe Government has appealed to various Non-Government Organisations, including those from the much-maligned United States and Britain.

The report, prepared by the Geneva-based Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) this month, shows the government requested $8 million from several United Nations agencies and NGOs.

A full list of those approached is not available but the report says the funding is for "Gender-based violence prevention and response".

The United Nations Children's Education Fund has already chipped in with $880 606, according to the report.

UNICEF is among Zimbabwe's largest donor organisations especially for issues affecting malnourished women and young children who are regularly sexually abused.
