Gwaze faces Panomariov at World Cup

Zimbabwe’s chess wizard, Robert Gwaze, faces the Ukranian Grand Master Ruslan Panomariov, rated fourth in the world, in Russia this month.

If Gwaze wins he will make history by becoming the first Zimbabwean to win against a Grand Master at this tournament. It is the second time that he has qualified to play at this highest level of competition. He admitted that preparing for Panomariov would be very difficult.

In the previous World cup Championships Panomariov lost his first game to the Egyptian Grand Master Elgindy who drew against Gwaze and Makoto at the Africa chess championships.

Panomariov has a rating of 2764,while Gwaze's rating is still in the 2400s. It will be a fearsome battle when the two chess wizards engage in this tournament on August 26. Before he flies to Russia Gwaze will play in the national chess championships – August 6-9.

The reigning National Champion, Dion Moyo, will defend his title, but stiff competition will come from Makoto Rodwell and Gwaze.

The National scholars championships will be held in Gweru at Chaplin High school from today until Saturday.
