"We are now meeting all standards … it's good quality water we are selling to our customers," a Harare Water Co. statement said.
Water inspectors at the UZ agree.
"The samples, taken from six different sources – as well as a mineral water sample – show that Harare water falls within World Health Organisation standards. In essence, this means that Harare's water is of international standards."
The UZ lab technician emphasized that the MDC-run Harare city has good water quality when it comes to the drinking water system, but noted that the water's colour falls short of international standards.
There have been violations of contaminant levels in recent history, poignantly when Zimbabwe's economic collapse peaked in 2008, with a cholera outbreak killing over 4,000 after the water and sanitation systems completely broke down.
The MDC-run council, which gave the mayor ship to a business savvy administrator, Muchadeyi Masunda, has picked up the pieces and slowly rebuilt the collapsed sanitation system.
The UZ inspectors pulled random samples from the water system in Budiriro, Warren Park, Greendale, the Central Business District, Kuwadzana and Highlands, which was tested for disinfection bi-products by the UZ water scientists.
Harare Water urged safe storage, and emphasised that once the city's water had reached water meters, its quality was no longer up to them, but was the concern of individuals.
