SA army to assist in Zim documentation

South Africa’s Home Affairs Department, grappling with understaffing, has enlisted the services of its army personnel to try and speed-up the documentation of Zimbabwean nationals.

The SA government is struggling to meet its own deadline set for the Documentation Programme, which could be extended even beyond the end of this month.

To try and speed-up the process, Home Affairs recently enlisted inter-departmental transfers of hundreds of South African National Defence Force members, to come into effect on September 1.

“By providing support to DHA, the SANDF will be fulfilling one of its missions, which is to provide support to other government departments when required – thereby ensuring that SANDF contribute in creating a better South Africa,” said defence spokesman, Brigadier General Marthie Visser.

“A total number of 350 SANDF members will be transferred through inter-departmental transfer to DHA and further 500 SANDF Reserve Force members will assist the DHA in order to complete the immigration documentation of Zimbabwean nationals and other foreign individuals,” added Visser.
