SADC leaders abandon Mugabe

SADC leaders who have been supporting President Robert Mugabe because of his role in the liberation movement have turned their backs on him, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has revealed.

The Prime Minister made the revelations while addressing party supporters at a peace rally here.

Over the years, President Mugabe and his Zanu (PF) party have enjoyed the support of regional leaders, but Tsvangirai said this has changed.

“We used to have time in which regional leaders would back ZANU (PF) on liberation solidarity grounds. But now most are turning to us saying look, this party we are supporting is destroying the country. They now understand our position and want us better,” PM Tsvangirai said.

MDC Secretary General and Finance Minister Tendai Biti echoed the same sentiments.

“The MDC is ready to rule. We understand we have people on our side. In other countries people have revolted on grounds of flawed elections but we are saying the transition should be peaceful.”
