Seek the living, not the dead

‘And when they say to you, “Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living? To the law and the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. (Isaiah 8:19-20)

This is such a serious issue in Zimbabwe that the word of God must speak for itself. There are many, many scriptures dealing with witchcraft and the occult and those things are an abomination to God.

Many Zimbabweans mistakenly believe that this is the sole preserve of black Zimbabweans. This is not so. Many white Zimbabweans are also involved in these practices (for example horoscopes) and the occult is becoming entrenched in the church too.

There will be arguments with regard to traditions and cultures. Well, I am sorry but God’s word is above all of that and He says that the traditions of man make the word of God to no effect. When traditions and culture in any form or in any race cut across God’s word then they have to go.

When we are born again of the Spirit we become a new creation. Our life is now in Christ. Nothing and no-one else can save us. Christ alone is our Saviour. Isaiah tells us that there is no Saviour but Him.

When anyone dabbles or practises in witchcraft or the occult they open themselves up to demonic possession. I have personally witnessed this and, again, race does not matter. I have seen it in both, and both were set free in Christ Jesus.

Africa is a deeply spiritual continent and if we will just embrace Jesus Christ with everything fibre of our being the light will shine bright from this continent. Despite being hugely blessed with natural and human resources, think of all our poverty, violence, bloodshed, hunger and disease.

Let us ask ourselves why? Where does this come from? It comes from the pit of hell. Our sin is heavy. It must be Christ and Christ alone. There is no one else. What happened to King Saul when he visited the witch of Endor and shunned the living God? (1 Samuel 28). The consequences are too terrible to think of.

The church must pray for the reality of Christ to be within us. We need to cry out for this and to ask God to lead us into all truth by His Holy Spirit.
