SRC battles to raise $727 000 for Maputo Games

The Sport and Recreation Commission is battling to raise $727 000 needed for Team Zimbabwe to take part in the 10th edition of the All-Africa Games scheduled for Mozambique next month.

Team Zimbabwe's chef de mission, Custom Kachambwa, said they were appealing to well-wishers for support. He said the budget was too big and government, the principal sponsor, needed assistance.

A total of 48 countries are expected to compete in 23 sporting disciplines at the games which will run from September 3-18.

Zimbabwe has entered 17 sporting disciplines – athletics, basketball (women), boxing, chess, cycling, football (women), judo, karate, netball, sailing, swimming, table tennis, tennis, taekwondo, triathlon and sports for people with disabilities.

Sprinter Ngonidzashe Makusha and swimming Icon Kirst Coventry were included in Team Zimbabwe for the Games and are key medal prospects.
