St Mary’s road in need of repair

Motorists plying the Nyanga-St Mary’s route right up to Mutoko District and beyond, have complained about the poor state of the road.

A senior officer from the Nyanga Rural District Council said that the funds directed for its rehabilitation were first made available about two decades ago but were diverted by state officials working in the area at the time. As a result, community members have been helping to repair.

“In official books and even on maps, ‘Bhinya Road’ is stated as a tarred road, which is not the case,” said the senior officer.

He added that the road was not under the jurisdiction of the rural district council and therefore the Zimbabwe National Road Authority funded by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority’s tollgate fees, has that responsibility.

“We need this road to be in good condition. As a community, we are always trying to do something about it,” said Michael Magaso, an aide to Chief Hata.

“This road is quite important for local farmers as it links Nyanga with outlying areas such as Ruwangwe and even Mutoko. Farmers need good road network systems for easy and quick access and delivery to markets,” said Ashlove Mutasa, Project Officer for the Zimbabwe National Environment Trust, a non-governmental organization working with local farmers in wards 19 and 22 of Nyanga district.

“In any rural set up what is required is an adequate transport infrastructure that is functional and maintained,” said Patrick Zhuwawo, a legislator for Zvimba South.
