Tobacco sales end today

Today (Thursday) is the final flue-cured tobacco auction sales day, according to the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board.

The TIMB said in a statement that final deliveries would be accepted until the close of today only.

All growers were advised to complete their grading and baling operations well before the final sales day, although contract sales would continue until further notice.

"The flue-cured tobacco auctions clean up sale for the 2011 Marketing Season will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2011."

Depending on the volumes of deliveries, the clean up sale could be continued for more than one day until all delivered tobacco had been sold.

The TIMB said it was still studying the flue-cured tobacco figures for the final days of the selling season and would make them available soon.

Zimbabwe expects a handsome selling season of more than 125 million kg of flue-cured tobacco.

Tobacco used to be the country's second most important foreign currency earner during the hectic days of hyperinflation and before dollarisation and demonetisation of the worthless Zimbabwe Bearer Cheque by the Reserve Bank.
