Two Freelance Journalists Arrested For Alleged Computer Theft!

TWO Zimbabwean Freelance Journalists have befor arrested for allegedly stealing a lap-top after a Non Governmental Organisation (NANGO) workshop held in Harare.

The three-day training workshop is being held at the five star Monomotapa Crowne Plaza Hotel. The NANGO is also holding an exhibition outside the venue also lasting three days.

The NANGO Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for Friday (tomorrow) in the capital city, Harare.

"I can confirm that we have two Senior Freelance Journalists in custody who call themselves 'Freelance Media Practitioners' here at the Harare Central Police Station," a Senior ZRP officer told The Zimbabwean.

"They (Journalists) are alleged to have stolen a lap-top belonging a member of NANGO. We are holding them until further investigations into the issue are completed," he said.

The two accused belong to an organisation calling itself the National Freelance Association of Journalists of Zimbabwe (Nafja).

A friend of one of the journalists who have not been named confirmed this evening that he had gone to Harare Central Police Station to see if there was anything he could do to help his friend.

This is probably the first time that Senior Journalists have been arrested for alleged theft.

In most cases journalists in Zimbabwe are arrested by the State for breaking the tough Public order and Security Act (POSA) regulations or AIPA.
