Firstly, where we may see "Unity" as being with each other, Almighty God sees "Unity" as us being one with Him! So it is not "Unity of Believers" but "Unity with Almighty God" That is, resting, abiding, doing His will, being one with Him, in unity with Him, letting Him live His will and purpose through us. So it is being one with God's intentions and plans. It is fellowshipping with Him, communicating, listening and walking in the light of His desires! (John 17: 21-23)
A biblical analogy is "Christ is the Head, we are the body". The body must be in unity with the Head, otherwise you have a decapitated body! The body surrenders to the intents of the Head, so that what the Head decides is carried out. When the body comes into total agreement with the Head, you have unity! So the body flees from its own desires, plans, purposes, will, self-ambition, which are all regarded as sin. It is letting Christ reign!
Secondly, for this unity with the Head, Christ, to become a reality, the body has to understand that "God is light, and there is absolutely NO darkness in Him. If we say, "We have fellowship with Him", and walk in the darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth." (1 John 1: 5,6) Fellowshipping with Him, with Father, Son and Holy Spirit, requires an obedient, holy, righteous walk with Him. The more "light" we walk in the more fellowship we have with Almighty God. When there is darkness in our lives the fellowship with God is broken and lost.
So we repent of not being ONE with Him, of doing our own thing, of running our own lives the way we want to.
Thirdly, as we walk in the "light" as He walks in the "light" we can have fellowship not only with Almighty God but with others who are walking with Him. "If we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another".
This is what Almighty God, by His Holy Spirit is trying to achieve, for believers to walk, firstly, in unity with Christ, who is the head of the body, who is "The Way, The Truth and The Life", who is Light and then, maintaining this unity with Christ, to walk with each other. It is NOT the other way round!!
So many leaders / churches are doing it the wrong way round!! They are seeking to bring other people / leaders/ churches into unity with themselves, building a bigger gathering, establishing a larger base, constructing an empire for God, all plans of self. These are false leaders / shepherds, wolves in sheep’s clothing, who are seeking their own interests.
God will move by His Spirit (not by huge advertising), in the lives of His disciples (not by emotion or excitement) bringing them into oneness with Himself.
