We want our country back

At great risk of being accused of seeking to distract the nation from mourning the death of liberation war hero Solomon Mujuru, one cannot help but notice the picture of total decay and collapse of service delivery depicted by the circumstances of his death - in particular the Fire Brigade’s response to the fire that consumed the struggle icon.

For starters, Mujuru need not have lighted the candle that rumour and preliminary investigations seem to suggest may have been left unattended to cause the fire that burnt the farmhouse together with its occupant, if only ZESA was doing half the job that we pay it to do – providing electricity.

But ZESA’s ineptitude is not even the most appalling thing about it all. What is staggering and utterly shameful is that, once the fire had been noticed and the Harare Fire Brigade alerted, it took them and their creaky fire engines almost four hours to reach Beatrice, barely 60 km away. And this in the middle of the night when there is hardly any other car on the roads.

And guess what, when the Fire Brigade eventually got to the farm they had no water! So what was the point of them going there in the first place?

We bet a fire could start at Fire Brigade headquarters today and the whole place would burn to ashes because there are no ladders to scale the heights, no fire hoses and no water.

Speculation is rife about whether the fire at the Beatrice farmhouse was an accident or otherwise. But that does not detract from the fact that the shoddy performance of the Fire Brigade points to one thing and one thing alone: service delivery in Zimbabwe is in a shambles.

It is so obvious that it is not worth repeating here that what has brought us to this sorry state of affairs are the failed policies of Zanu (PF), a party in which Mujuru was no small player and therefore – and regrettably so given his other sterling contribution to Zimbabwe – not without blame.

And the time has now come for Zimbabweans to rise and demand our country back from President Robert Mugabe and his party.

Speaking upon his arrival back from the SADC summit held in Angola last week, Mugabe lamented that some parties in the unity government wanted to perpetuate the life of the administration forever.

As reported by The Herald, Mugabe said: “There are some people who want to stick to the vehicle of the GPA and do not want to leave this ramshackle (sic). We are saying chovhamubaiwa hatiidi isu.” (We don’t want a dilapidated vehicle.)

It is time we told Mugabe to take away this ramshackle of a country that he has given us and give us back our beautiful Zimbabwe.
