What is the Gospel?

There is a Christian forum on the web which is one of my favourite tools. I believe God has provided it to help me learn more about Him: www.johnthebaptisttv.com

However, I have to be careful when reading or participating in these forums. Let me give an example. Recently the above website discussed “What is the Gospel?” This was introduced by one of the forum members. Now, we have a “tree of knowledge” and a “tree of life”. It became clear that some members just liked knowledge for the sake of pride.

Others were seeking life and truth. The two trees are both appealing but to different people and with different fruit resulting. The debate went on for a while, with members adding more and more Scriptures – all in an effort to obtain biblically what the Gospel embraced.

I presented a simple answer to the question by saying, “Gospel means Good News. The Good News is not set a set of rules and doctrines but is Christ Himself. HE is the Good News. HE is the Gospel. So the Gospel is not a set of beliefs or sayings but is a Person, the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

While some readily received this and had revelation of its meaning, others continued to debate whether such and such an item was part of the Gospel. I came to the sad conclusion that they were more interested in the tree of knowledge than the tree of life.

We encourage websites as a tool for learning and receiving revelation from God but please proceed with care and discernment. – The Faith Matters Editorial Team. Should you wish to communicate with us please email editor.faithmatters@gmail.com
