Workers suspended for $8 000 fraud

Eight council workers here were recently suspended for defrauding the council of thousands of cash from collected revenue.

Six of the suspects, Sherperd Shungira (Water Superintendent), Tigere (Revenue Officer), Ndudzo (Works Administrator), Mabhodha (Welfare Clerk), Gashiteni (Revenue Officer) and Sweden (Revenue Officer) formed a syndicate to defraud the cash strapped local authority of $8 000 through water sales. Mabhodha allegedly destroyed revenue receipts to help cover the culprits’ footprints.

“Tigere appeared at a council hearing last week and the outcome will be made public soon. Other suspended accomplices will appear before the same hearing committee soon,” said the chairperson for staffing and services, Dominic Matagira.

According to the case outline, the suspects would fraudulently receipt cash for water sold to a local company, Proton Bakeries, which buys water in bulk direct at the council water works for its giant bakery project.

Other workers, David Jack (Hostels Caretaker) and Dangarembwa (Messenger housing), were also suspended for allegedly pocketing cash paid by council tenants for rent.

Workers at the sewerage department were also under probe by the council audit team for facilitating illegal sewer connections which prejudiced council of thousands of dollars. Residents benefitting from the sewer connection scandal would subsequently pay nothing to council as the connections remain unregistered at town house. Jane Makoni
