Zhakata smiles again as radio plays new album

After a five-year black-out on Zanu (PF) controlled radio and television stations, Leonard Zhakata’s latest album Gotwe (Last Born) is now receiving ample airplay.

Zhakata, once labelled an enemy of the local radio stations, fell out of favour as party hardliners felt his music was politically incorrect. But he seems to have made his way back to the top echelons of musical glory.

The songs Simudza Mureza, Dambura Mbabvu and Menduru are receiving abundant airplay from the two vernacular radio stations, Radio Zimbabwe and National FM.

“At last I am happy that my album has finally been released. Some of the songs are being played on the radio – so my fans can enjoy my music. The problem was that there were some people who were misinterpreting my songs,” said Zhakata.

Asked to explain the meaning of his songs, Zhakata said: “If I try to explain the meaning of the songs then people will start misinterpreting again, so I think it is wise not to comment.”

Simudza Mureza (Raise The Flag) is a song that instils hope as Zhakata encourages people to work hard in order to achieve their goals in life.

Arguably the best composer in the country, Zhakata sings that God had good plans for everyone and He will intervene – encouraging people not to despair but to persevere by raising the flag of victory in their hearts.

Dambura Mbabvu is another pug track that is rich in meaning. The eloquent lyricist says there are some people who have brilliant ideas that could benefit the lives of many, but it is unfortunate that there is nobody to listen to those ideas.

The album is already topping the charts at Metro Studios and Zhakata is currently on a countrywide tour promoting it.
