ZIBF comes to Goromonzi

The Zimbabwe Women’ s Resource Centre and Network last week commemorated the Zimbabwe International Book Fair with the Domboshava communities in Goromonzi under the theme, “Reading is development: Promoting Information Literacy in an Information Society”

As part of its popular Gender and Development Talks platform, ZWRCN invited women, men, school children, teachers, shool headmasters School Development Committee members and village heads at Zambuko Community library located about 60km from Harare to share a collective reading experience.

Primary and Secondary Schools, namely, Kachuta, Chiriseri, Jingo, Mutonda, Munyawiri and Govera attended this event.

Speaking at the event, Councillor for Munyawiri Ward One, Archibold Mudimu, said it is important for the Goromonzi communities to realise the value of reading and to appreciate that their community library was an important resource which should be utilised effectively for the betterment of the community.

“ I am both humbled and challenged by the ZWRCN gesture…for they have come to tell us to come to our own library and to read…”, said Mudimu.

Speaking at the same occasion, Chairperson of the Domboshava Village Headmen, Mr Makuvire encouraged rural communities to be open to learning and to look out for opportunities for information sharing.

Central to ZWRCN’s work with rural libraries is the need to share information and promote a reading culture among communities as a way of enhencing learning and empowering communities particularly women.

On this occasion, the ZWRCN staff led participants in various age groups in reading and discussion sessions.

Addressing the participants, the ZWRCN Executive Director, Naome Chimbetete said Information is a powerful resource which communities can use for personal advancement and community development purposes.

“ Our message today is that reading is development and information is power, lets share it”, said Chimbetete.
