Anti-Mugabe production set to win

A music production that urges veteran Zimbabwe leader, President Robert Mugabe, to step down from power is in the running to win a major award at the upcoming South African Traditional Music Awards.

The album, Obama, which has tracks highlighting the America leader and Nelson Mandela as true heroes but Mugabe as a despot, has been nominated for the Album of the Year Award.

Traditional music group Izingane Zoma are the brains behind the Maskandi album, which has been well-received among South Africans and Zimbabweans living here after fleeing the iron-fisted rule of the octogenarian leader over the years.

In the song Umhlola waseZimbabwe, which loosely translates to Zimbabwe’s Woes, the group urges Mugabe, in power since 1980, to give the baton to MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who defeated him in the last general elections in 2008.

The Durban-based Izingane Zoma also urge African leaders to intervene in the political deadlock bedevilling Zimbabwe by urging the former guerrilla leader to step down as his partisan politics were the roots of the problems the country finds itself in.

The SATMAs, which celebrate local traditional music, are scheduled for October 1 at the Durban International Conference Centre.
