Coveting a relationship

Shortly after the 2000 referendum in Zimbabwe and the start of the land issue and the first lives were violently lost, I knelt down to cry out to God.

I asked Him to show me what was in our hearts in Zimbabwe. The Holy Spirit immediately spoke to me and said, “Covetousness”.

I believe that the church in this nation needs to face certain issues that the bible deals with decisively.

Some many years ago, my now late twin sister had a very beautiful home in Mount Pleasant in Harare. I had been on a visit and was on my way to my own home when this incredible feeling of envy hit me. I was horrified with myself and immediately realised that I was ‘coveting’ my sister’s home.

Without hesitation I cried out to the Lord for forgiveness and confessed that I had also been guilty of ungratefulness. The Holy Spirit was certainly teaching me something that day and unveiling what was in my heart.

Most of us know that, ‘Thou shalt not covet’ is the tenth Commandment.

Ephesians 5: 5 goes on to say this, “For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.”

Covetousness is idolatry! My close friend and sister in Christ, Joyce, who has now gone to be with the Lord, used to say to me that there is a ‘majealousy’ sitting on most of our shoulders in Zimbabwe. We covet just about everything someone else has and are jealous if Mai Estnat has a better maize field that I have or if Sekuru Kingdon has a better herd of cattle or if Tete Precious drives a newer model 4X4 than me.

Covetousness is a sin before God and has caused untold damage to families, to communities, to churches and to Zimbabwe as a whole. We need to ‘covet’ with all of our hearts a deeper relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the pearl of great price. He is our treasure beyond earthly value. When He is pre-eminent in every part of our lives, family, society and country will function well.
