Dhlakama wants his brother to leave the army

Afonso Dhlakama, the leader of Mozambique’s main opposition party, the former rebel movement Renamo, has advised his brother Elias to leave the national armed forces, the FADM, reports Tuesday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Wamphula Fax”, published in the northern city of Nampula.

Speaking to reporters in Nampula, Dhlakama said he had urged his brother, who holds the rank of colonel, to leave the FADM because he considered the army to be “partisan and discriminatory”.

He claimed that Elias Dhlakama is being “humiliated” at the Samora Machel military Academy, because he is not being given duties in line with his academic and professional qualifications.

Dhlakama, who calls himself a four star general, said “I have insisted that my brother should leave that pigsty”.

But the Renamo leader’s appeals have fallen on deaf ears. Elias Dhlakama, “Wamphula Fax” says, has rejected his brother’s demand, and has said that he is in the army to perform a patriotic duty.

Dhlakama’s recent statements have become increasingly divorced from reality. He has claimed that he will lead a “people’s revolution” against the government, which will drive the ruling Frelimo Party from office by Xmas.

He promised that he would set up barracks in the centre of the country, to which former Renamo guerrillas will be recalled. Those barracks were supposed to be created last week, but so far there is no sign of them.
