Diamonds in Murewa: false hope for villagers

The hopes of villagers have been dashed after “diamonds” discovered in Murewa west turned out to be quartz, which is of relatively little value.

There was a flurry of activity in Murewa after some locals thought they had found the diamonds. But further examination from experts have dashed their hopes.

Many people have a from-rags-to -riches story owing to the discovery of diamonds in Chiadzwa. Many poor villagers became rich overnight, before the government sealed of the alluvial diamonds fields to start an expropriation which has thus far been shrouded in controversy.

Unlike diamonds, which are made from great heat and pressure over time, quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust. It is made up of a continuous framework of silicon. There are many varieties of quartz, several of which are semi precious gemstones.
