EU project on sexual health

The European Union has launched a project with local partners aimed at scaling up access to sexual and reproductive health and rights for young people aged between 10 and 24.

Southern Africa HIV and AIDS information Dissemination Services is the leading local partner in the project that will be spread across five provinces: Harare, Masvingo, Bindura, Manicaland and Midlands provinces.

Speaking during media training Rennias Mundingi, the SAFAIDS Programme Officer, said the project was aimed at reducing stigma and discrimination of young people over sexual issues.

“Young people have sexual and reproductive rights that they should be accorded. They have the right to choose their marital status and have a family and the right to privacy when receiving health care.

“This project is therefore crucial in that it will raise awareness about this among the young people themselves and also advocate for policies that will achieve that,” Mandingi said.

Orirando Manwere, Head of Communication for the National Aids Council, added that if adolescents and young people were to be empowered in the area of sexual and reproductive health it would go a long way towards reducing new infections of HIV.
