Officially opening 54th edition South Western District Show society in Gwanda yesterday, Agriculture Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Minister Dr Joseph Made said the government had managed to put resources together to ensure the availability of inputs in all corners of the country.
“Preparations for this year’s farming season are going well and I’m pleased to announce that adequate inputs have been purchased and before the end of this month distribution will begin,” he said.
He said the distribution process would be spearheaded by various departments, particularly Agritex, which have been ordered to work with speed.
The Minister said that unlike previous seasons where the priority was given to commercial farmers alone, this year input programmes will benefit all categories, including the communal tillers.
Dr Made was, however, quick to urge farmers to be more productive and ensure the government input scheme was not put to waste.
“Over the years the government has embarked on a land reform programme that saw many indigenous farmers benefiting. I want to challenge you (farmers) today to fully utilise these opportunities being created by Government by becoming more productive,” said the Minister.
