It is now patently clear there is a convergence of views among Zimbabweans of different political persuasions that Mugabe should step down.
The Wikileaks revelations have confirmed what we knew all along: that the Jonathan Moyos, the Emmerson Mnangagwas and a host of Zanu (PF) officials speak with a forked tongue. By day, they are exhorting Zimbabweans to support Zanu (PF) and it's president. By night, they are busy telling foreigners that Mugabe must go.
By day, they sign and force Zimbabweans to do the same, petitions decrying so-called sanctions against a few individuals in Zanu (PF). By night, they conveniently forget to urge the ambassadors representing the countries imposing those "sanctions" to remove them. By day, they condemn western countries. By night, wine and dine with their ambassadors – eagerly loquacious in their back-stabbing and deception.
By day, they tell us to throw our lot in with Zanu (PF). By night, they are planning to form opposition parties. Now that they have been exposed for what they really are – double dealers – we hope no one will take them seriously when they harp on about loyalty, sovereignty and patriotism.
The leaks are significant in that they establish Mugabe’s utter isolation. But what next? Will the Attorney General, who threatened to launch proceedings against the Prime Minister after previous Wikileaks revelations, proceed against the significant number of his colleagues for their ‘treasonous crimes’? Will the house of stone crumble like the house of straw it really is? Only one thing is certain – what has been whispered behind closed doors will be shouted from the rooftops.
